Caruso was also the most popular singer in any genre in the first twenty years of the twentieth century and one of the pioneers of recorded music. On 1 February 1904, Caruso began recording exclusively for the Victor Talking Machine Company in the United States. From February 1906, however, orchestral accompaniments became the norm, utilizing an ensemble of between eleven and twenty musicians. The regular conductors of these recording sessions with orchestra were Walter B. Rogers and, from 1916, Josef Pasternack.
